Why does Kaloko Trust work in Enterprise Development?
Kaloko Trust has always recognised that local income-generation is vital for sustainable rural development: even rural households need cash for simple items such as soap, medicines and school uniforms. Yet Zambia has been in chronic recession for 20 years and there is virtually no economic activity or employment in rural areas.

What are we doing?
Kaloko Trust has developed, and continues to support, a number of small-scale enterprises, based around our Luansobe Training Centre and farm. These provide the economic basis for long-term local development by raising skill levels, providing employment, adding value to agricultural products and generating and supporting local economic activity. Any surplus revenue generated by the enterprises is in turn used to underpin Kaloko’s Community Social Development programme. Examples include:

Dairy & Beef Herd which generate income and provide training in animal husbandry

Hammer Mill and Oil Press for processing maize and sunflower seeds

Cheesemaking facilities, to add value to milk from 2 Women’s Dairy Co-ops established by Kaloko Trust

Shop for providing local community with goods and services, including local honey

Sawmill, which adds value to sustainably harvested local timber

Block & Tile making, for the construction and maintenance of local buildings

Women's Dairy Co-op

Construction using Brick-making machine
