Why
does Kaloko Trust work in Natural Resource Management?
Over the last 16 years there has been, and continues to be, a
very considerable increase in the local population. This has meant
ever-increasing pressure on the fragile local environment. Water
remains a major issue: rains are often erratic and as the population
increases, water tables fall and wells dry up. Forests play a
vital role in people’s lives: they provide fuel for cooking,
construction materials, a source of food (such as mushrooms and
fruit), medicines, and a source of income through charcoal production.
Population pressures and indiscriminate deforestation threaten
both the forests and livelihoods.
What are we doing?
Kaloko’s work aims to redress the balance of these issues
by demonstrating and promoting sustainable approaches to Natural
Resource Management, which will improve livelihoods for both current
