Why does Kaloko Trust work in Natural Resource Management?
Over the last 16 years there has been, and continues to be, a very considerable increase in the local population. This has meant ever-increasing pressure on the fragile local environment. Water remains a major issue: rains are often erratic and as the population increases, water tables fall and wells dry up. Forests play a vital role in people’s lives: they provide fuel for cooking, construction materials, a source of food (such as mushrooms and fruit), medicines, and a source of income through charcoal production. Population pressures and indiscriminate deforestation threaten both the forests and livelihoods.

What are we doing?
Kaloko’s work aims to redress the balance of these issues by demonstrating and promoting sustainable approaches to Natural Resource Management, which will improve livelihoods for both current and forthcoming generations. Examples include:

Working with communities to build Rainwater Catchment Tanks (or community dams), which help replenish water tables and support small scale irrigation in the dry season

Training and supporting beekeepers, so that communities are able to realise an alternative income from the forest than the more destructive charcoal production

Training and equipping communities to preserve seasonal foods gathered from the forests to improve food security and nutrition

Researching and promoting sustainable bark harvesting (bark is both used as medicine and sold to generate income)

Promoting and supporting community tree nurseries to help reforestation, generate income and improve food security and nutrition

Demonstrating and promoting more sustainable approaches to charcoal production

On a smaller scale as part of our water programme we also have supporters raising money to build community wells. If you would like to fundraise for a well please go to our fundraising page for information. FUNDRAISING >

If you would like to become a sponsor of the beekeeping training programme please visit our beekeeping sponsorship page. BEEKEEPING SPONSORSHIP >
