  About The Schools
In 1991 Kaloko Trust established Luansobe Upper Basic School (LUBS) to provide educational opportunities to the local children. Kaloko continues to support the school through our School Sponsorship Scheme. LUBS offers Grades 1-9, and at the moment we have more than 800 children at the school. We also support over 40 more children who started their education at LUBS, but are now continuing in Grades 10, 11 and 12 at other secondary schools.

LUBS is part of the Programme for the Advancement of Girls’ Education (PAGE), an initiative started by the Zambian Government. Under this scheme classes are segregated by gender, as it is believed that girls fare better academically this way. Traditionally it is not considered important for female children to get an education but Kaloko is working hard to try to redress this imbalance.

In 1996 the Kaloko Crèche was established. This is also supported through the School Sponsorship Scheme. The crèche currently has over 50 babies and toddlers, aged 3 months to 6 years. The children are looked after by three Nursery Assistants and one Nursery Teacher. Lessons for the older ones are in English, and children who have attended the crèche tend to be more advanced than their peers who have not, when they move on to LUBS. Having the crèche not only gives young children a better start in life, it also allows their mothers to pursue training or work.
