About
The Schools
In 1991 Kaloko Trust established Luansobe Upper
Basic School (LUBS) to provide educational opportunities to the
local children. Kaloko continues to support the school through our
School Sponsorship Scheme. LUBS offers Grades 1-9, and at the moment
we have more than 800 children at the school. We also support over
40 more children who started their education at LUBS, but are now
continuing in Grades 10, 11 and 12 at other secondary schools.
LUBS is part of the Programme for the Advancement
of Girls’ Education (PAGE), an initiative started by the Zambian
Government. Under this scheme classes are segregated by gender,
as it is believed that girls fare better academically this way.
Traditionally it is not considered important for female children
to get an education but Kaloko is working hard to try to redress
this imbalance.
In
1996 the Kaloko Crèche was established. This is also supported
through the School Sponsorship Scheme. The crèche currently
has over 50 babies and toddlers, aged 3 months to 6 years. The children
are looked after by three Nursery Assistants and one Nursery Teacher.
Lessons for the older ones are in English, and children who have
attended the crèche tend to be more advanced than their peers
who have not, when they move on to LUBS. Having the crèche
not only gives young children a better start in life, it also allows
their mothers to pursue training or work.
In 2006 Kaloko Trust began supporting Kandulwe Community School as part of a wider programme to expand our help for those needing basic education in the Luansobe area. LUBS is overcrowded and the government has made no provision for the hundreds of other children in the area who also need an education.
Kandulwe Community School was started in 1999 and now with two government-salaried and five volunteer teachers, offers Grades 1-7 to 220 students. In the absence of proper government provision for education, community schools are set up and run by the goodwill of the local villagers in their community. Subsequent government grants are small and erratic. Mostly such schools struggle to get by on contributions made by the parents, and in a subsistence-farming neighbourhood this is difficult.
Community Schools like Kandulwe are very much in need of Kaloko’s help. By including them in our sponsorship programme we provide them with regular support, which they can use to improve the school and raise the standards of teaching and learning. Sponsorship money is used to develop such basics as proper classrooms, furniture and sanitation, as well as teaching resources. |
